Palm Springs, Part 1

Hello again! The last few months have absolutely flown by- and I’ve been a busy bee making some new pieces for when the temps creep higher and higher. I’ve had the fortune of taking two trips to Palm Springs so far this year, and I’ve been thrilled to have some new pieces to wear on our trips! I actually have a third trip on the books (that I won, more on that later!) and so I’ve been planning my time carefully to crank out some new pieces.

I’d love to bring you along on some of the highlights from the first trip.

THIS COLOR COMBO!

I absolutely adore this 60’s/70’s cotton blend I found several years ago, and I had originally planned for a shirt/shorts set. Despite my best efforts, it was impossible to cut out a matching set without a hodgepodge of mismatched stripes and unattractive pattern placement. I often find that when I let the textile speak for itself, I end up much happier with the end result. This caftan is incredibly cool and wonderful, and I can’t imagine it being anything other than what it is!

Caftans and cocktails?

Lately we’ve been bringing our girls (Edie and Edna) along with us, so rather than staying in our usual hotel, we’ve been renting houses around the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area!

This first trip was at the end of March, and the weather in Salt Lake had been extremely dreary and grey. Our weekend getaway to temps in the high 70s and lots of clear blue skies was just what the doctor ordered. It was great to rent a house for a few days and lay low, keeping to ourselves and just enjoying the sun.

I could go on and on about how much I love PS, but the look on my face says it all!

People always ask me, “Where do you find such perfect backgrounds?” and in all honesty, most of it is just pure luck! The photos above are from the second day of our trip—we visited some of the Desert X installations, and then went to the downtown strip to pop into a few boutiques. I spotted these two places as perfect moments to snap photos because I thought it would showcase the go this jumpsuit, which is made from a 70’s tulip print cotton from my stash. It has big deep pockets for the necessities, but I opted for a fun yellow/white marbled acrylic clutch to compliment the look.

I love color and bright patterns, and there is something about the desert landscape, the bright blue sky, and the plethora of midcentury atmosphere that fuels my creative drive. I feel that the pieces I make just sort of “fit in” there.

Brunch at Norma’s!Though we didn’t stay at the Parker, a trip to PS without brunch at Norma’s wouldn’t be complete! This 60’s linen palazzo pant jumpsuit was originally made for the week of our wedding, but since we rescheduled I decided that if I wore it to brunch at the hotel it still kind of counts! It’s a dream to wear—super loose and breezy, and it moves like a dream. Not to toot my own horn, but I think that I did a great job lining up the stripes everywhere— including the raglan sleeves! Here’s a secret too— the stripes of the fabric ran crossgrain, and so I had to seam the fabric to get the stripes to go horizontally on my tall frame. Can you spot where I seamed the stripes?

This was another piece that I made right before we left NYC, and it’s 60’s/70’s terrycloth! It is the perfect thing to throw on after drying off from the pool, or when temps start to dip at night in the desert. It’s insanely comfortable, and I find myself reaching for it again and again.

This first trip was a short one, but I was thrilled to see a coworker from Lion King who is living out there now! We had a socially distant cocktail party poolside, which was absolutely divine.

More on our second trip, coming soon! Stay tuned!
